Car Donation Liabilities

Once you have made the decision to donate your car to charity, it is important to consider your car donation liabilities. Most people will donate a car, or maybe a truck, boat, RV or other vehicle to a charity of their choice and once the donation has been made, they move on with their lives and don't give any car donation liabilities another thought. After all, their car has been donated to charity and they no longer have possession (or control!).
However, if you don't follow the right procedure, you could end up with car donation liabilities such as unpaid parking tickets or possibly even worse. What happens if you donate your car and it is being driven afterwards and is involved in an accident?
Some organizations may ask you to follow an incorrect procedure to make it easier for them to handle the sale of your vehicle after they take control. Unfortunately, just one small mistake on your part can leave you wide open to car donation liabilities once your vehicle has left your possession. For your chosen charity to get the best benefit, and for you to get the best tax deduction with minimal inconvenience, always know the law and do your research before you make a vehicle donation!

"Some charities sell the cars they receive either at auctions or to junk yards as scrap. Others use them for their programs or give them to needy people. Before donating your car, you should ask how your car will be used and, if it will be sold, how much the charity will receive.........."
